This blog details the many routines that I go through on a weekly basis to maximise my manly sides. I will show you how I keep myself well-groomed, as attractive as possible, and healthy.
As I am budget-conscious whenever I do most things, this blog should give you some affordable ways to elevate your life. Just click on the images and you’ll get that direct affiliate link to every product I use!
It is also my intention to update this blog whenever something changes or I learn something new! I think any man reading this will also appreciate my no-fluff approach.
The meaning of “manly”
The meaning of “manly” is multifaceted, but I believe there are certain qualities that men ought to exude. These qualities include bravery, certainty, masculinity (itself a complex term), honesty, and directness.
Check out my blog on My Goals for 2024 – everyone can become better
This can mean that the man ought to make little effort to “hide”, and should make effort to emphasis his advantages of body and mind. This confidence he exudes should be a comfort to those he protects and values.
Skincare for the Manly
I believe that skincare is a very important aspect of modern life. I don’t believe that a man needs makeup, or other BB creams to hide their blemishes.
There are some ways, however that anyone can improve their skin’s appearance.
Facial Wash
I have always had an oily T-Zone and sensitive skin. It took many years of experimentation to find a product that works well for my skin. In the end, I have settled on La Roche Posay Effaclar Purifying foaming gel. The product is cleasing, but not too harsh on the skin (I use it everyday with no issues). I also rarely get breakouts.
Spot Cream
If you want to target specific spots and blemishes, I also recommend La Roche Posay. This time the product of choice is their niacinamide cream. It reduces redness and also dries up spots after a day or two in my experience.
Facial Moisturiser
Any face routine is incomplete without a moisturiser. This one I also use day and night. You might want to consider the one with SPF for day use though (below).
Shaving for the Manly
At Home
I like to keep myself clean shaven, so I enjoy a satisfying close and accurate shave. Unlike like most modern gents, I actually use a safety razor rather than a regular razor. A safety razor offers frankly, a better shave than other razors as long as you master the technique.
I always think about cost-per-shave, and overall, even though they cost more to begin with, the cost of the blades works out to significantly less over time.
What’s more satisfying than unscrewing your razor? I use the Muhle razor, but I am tempted to switch for the cool butterfly baili butterfly razor.
Blades
The best blades for these razors are probably the Shave Factory feather blades, which work out very cost effective over time.
Shaving Cream Bowl
I’m old-fashioned, so I use a brush and a shaving cream bowl to give me the most satisfying shave. You should always shave topless, unless you want to put your clothes in danger.
I’m very tempted by this set by Muhle, albeit I know you can obtain a kit that does the same for a cheaper price individually:
When I Travel
I always carry an electric shaver when travelling. It’s just a lot less fuss and makes shaving very quick and easy.
You don’t necessarily get the same quality of shave, but this isn’t the biggest priority when travelling.
I enjoy the Philips One Blade for these quick shaves.
Scents
Whilst I’m not that into cologne, I think that all men should have a scent ready to impress that lucky lady, man, manlady, ladyman, etc.
Cologne is a very personal thing, so I’d advise that you go with something that suits your age and temperament. Take a female friend, or two with you when you go shopping and find something that they find irresistible.
I generally use Pour Homme by Dolce and Gabbana, as I think it is understated, manly and classic.
Small Tip
If you ever find yourself lacking scent, you might be wondering if there is some way you can smuggle some of your expensive cologne with you. There is a way. An atomiser allows you to take your favourite scent directly from the cologne bottle.
Deodorant
Personally, I have used Mitcham for years, and I find it a good solution for any BO issues I have. The stick is my usual companion, but the non marking spray is excellent to carry around (if a bit large if you don’t have a bag).
Supplements
Something that I have got into lately, is ensuring my body has the necessary vitamins and minerals to function at its best. Of course, our food contains most of these nutrients, but with the hectic lifestyle that can come in modern times, there are some that I take everyday to be at my best.
CoEnzyme Q10 and Omega 3
For me, this is all about brain and heart health. These are found most prolifically in oily fishes.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for converting nutrients into energy and acts as a powerful antioxidant, defending against free radicals that can harm cell membranes, interfere with DNA, and lead to cellular death.
Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for building cell membranes, influencing cell receptor activity, and serving as the basis for hormones regulating blood clotting, artery function, and inflammation. Their diverse effects may contribute to preventing heart disease and stroke, managing conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and offering protective benefits against cancer and other health issues.
Gingko Biloba and Ginseng
Gingko Biloba is also for my brain. There have been a number of studies revealing ways in which it can improve cognition and memory. Potentially it might even stave off dementia. I first heard about these effects of gingko on the DOAC podcast episode:
There isn’t anything more manly than a sharp mind, so try to keep it that way.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of calcium and phosphate levels within the body, essential for the well-being of bones, teeth, and muscles. Adequate amounts of these nutrients are vital for sustaining optimal bone health.
Insufficient vitamin D levels can result in bone deformities, such as rickets in children, and adult-onset conditions like osteomalacia, which leads to bone pain. Therefore, ensuring an ample supply of vitamin D is essential for preventing these issues.
In line with government recommendations, it is advised that individuals consider incorporating a daily vitamin D supplement into their routine, particularly during the autumn and winter months. This proactive approach supports overall health and guards against potential deficiencies in this vital nutrient.
I think that vitamin D supplementation is quite important for most people in the UK. It is even more important if you are very dark-skinned.
Conclusion
So these are some of the things I do to keep fresh, together and manly. I will occasionally revisit this blog to update it with new information and anything I’ve missed, but this list should be useful for anyone aiming to up their game without completely breaking the bank.
